Positive Behaviours for Learning

At St Joseph’s Merewether, the Positive Behaviours for Learning (PB4L) framework provides a proactive and consistent approach to promoting respectful, responsible, and safe behaviours across all areas of school life. PB4L supports both effective teaching and positive student engagement, creating an environment where every child can learn and flourish.

PB4L is grounded in the belief that positive behaviour can be explicitly taught, modelled, and reinforced. The framework promotes and rewards desirable behaviours while establishing clear, consistent expectations for how students respond to challenges. By focusing more intentionally on the behaviours we want to see—rather than reacting disproportionately to those we don’t—PB4L helps build a supportive learning culture founded on encouragement, fairness, and accountability.

In addition to guiding classroom and playground behaviour, PB4L contributes to whole-school wellbeing by strengthening our shared identity and sense of belonging. It reinforces the values of kindness, respect, and integrity that underpin our school mission and Catholic ethos. Restorative practices are embedded within the framework to ensure that when mistakes occur, students are supported to take responsibility, repair relationships, and learn from their experiences.

By sharing this framework with families, we aim to build a strong home–school partnership where parents and carers can understand and use the same language, expectations, and strategies that guide our students each day. Together, we can nurture a community where positive behaviour is celebrated, relationships are strengthened, and every learner feels valued and supported to reach their full potential
