Extra-Curricular

At St Joseph’s, we pride ourselves on providing a rich variety of extra-curricular activities that nurture students’ interests, talents, and personal growth beyond the classroom. These opportunities encourage creativity, curiosity, teamwork, and confidence, helping students discover new passions while strengthening their sense of belonging within our school community.

Creative Arts & Performance
Students can express themselves through our vibrant Creative Arts programs. These include school choirs and individual musical tutorials in singing, guitar and piano that foster musical skills and performance confidence. Our annual Creative and Practical Arts evenings showcase the incredible talents of our students in visual arts, music, drama, and technology.

Clubs & Special Interest Groups
We offer a range of clubs designed to spark curiosity and support diverse interests. The gardening club promotes environmental stewardship and hands-on learning, while our chess club develops strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. ICT and Art clubs provide opportunities for students to explore digital technologies, visual creativity, and collaborative projects. Our Speech and Drama program helps students build strong communication skills and self-assurance.

Academic Enrichment
Students are supported to extend their learning through a range of academic initiatives. These include the Premier’s Reading Challenge and participation in local and national English, Mathematics, Science, Computer, Writing, and Spelling competitions. These programs encourage students to challenge themselves, celebrate achievement, and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Lunchtime Activities
The Library is a welcoming hub of activity during lunchtime, offering students a place to read, explore, and participate in structured activities that promote imagination, relaxation, and a love of literature. Students also have access to our Lunch Club, a calm and supportive space designed for quiet play and creative play options—perfect for those who prefer a gentler, more reflective break in their day. In addition, our Chess Club operates at lunchtime, providing students with the opportunity to develop strategic thinking, concentration, and problem-solving skills in an enjoyable and social environment.

School Events & Social Activities
Our school discos, themed events, and community gatherings provide fun, social experiences that strengthen friendships and build school spirit in a safe and inclusive environment.

Community Engagement

St Joseph’s is deeply committed to fostering a strong sense of community within Merewether and the wider Newcastle region. We actively promote social responsibility, compassion, and service, encouraging students to live out our Catholic values in practical and meaningful ways.

We are proud to support and participate in initiatives such as the St Vincent de Paul Winter and Christmas Appeals, where students and families generously contribute to those in need. Our involvement in Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies reflects our respect and gratitude for those who have served our nation. Through these experiences, students develop empathy, civic pride, and an understanding of the importance of service, remembrance, and community connection.
